                                                     Software Design

Our software engineers write software for many types of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) and can configure various SCADA and  Communication Networks such as Ethernet, Profibus and Devicenet.

In particular we are very experienced with the various Rockwell products along with Siemens S7 and Mitsubishi.

 From the customer P&ID, electrical drawings and Functional Design Specification the project software is developed.

The PLC is often connected to HMI which the operator uses to monitor or control the plant.

There is normally a graphical representation of the plant on the operator HMI screen. In this example the main screen closely resembles the P&ID.

These screens generally show plant tags and the condition of various valves positions usually indicated by different colours. Dynamic flow rates, pressures, temperature and speeds are displayed in numeric engineering units.

Generally there will be a number of screens which will include screens for recipe selection, alarm history, trending and engineering etc.

Screens can be password protected so that only an engineer for example has access, maybe to manually operate a motor or valve for maintenance purposes.

The majority of the HMI's in use today are touch operated screens.

Often the use of wired and wireless Ethernet, Devicenet, Profibus and other networks will reduced the number of cables required between the control panel and field devices which can reduce costs but also improve performance.

Many of our systems include remote monitoring over telephone modem or, more recently, on the Internet. This allows us to monitor plant and machinery from our office to help resolve problems or modify software without the need to travel.
